seat position

seat fore, aft and angle

Unsurprisingly, the most common cause of discomfort is the seat. In my experience, seat discomfort can be fixed very quickly and in some cases by a minor seat angle adjustment. Look for a saddle that supports the 'sit bones' of the pelvis, this helps to take the weight off the soft tissue. Seat position also affects pelvic rotation, correct pelvic rotation is often the key to improving reach and reducing lower back issues with both road and TT/TRI bikes.
Experienced riders and beginners alike, often use approximate seat heights determined solely by leg extension. Whilst there are various methods to determine seat height, it is important to consider more than just extension. At Pave the Way, we not only asses the X - Y plane of extension, flexion and knee fore/aft, but also the lateral knee movement and foot support, for your most efficient seat height yet.

Stack and reach measurements enable us to uniformly compare frames, by creating a stack and reach measurement (essentially an x-y co-ordinate relative to the bottom bracket) we can accurately compare frames. This helps us to determine the best options for each individual. Having the right frame size is important in achieving a fit that allows the rider and bike to perform optimally.

This is an area that we improve for a lot of clients, in my experience creating the correct hand interaction with the bars and hoods makes the single biggest difference to comfort. This is as true on time trial bikes as it is on road bikes. Comfort here is important as it removes agitations whilst promotes correct posture and support through the arms and shoulders.

stem height & length

Adjusting stem length and position
for improved riding

Whilst playing a vital role in comfort, it can also change the way your bike rides and your sustained performance. Being over stretched is a common cause of lower back or neck pain and is easily fixed. Having the correct stem height and length can be the difference between holding a TT position for an event, getting a result or being restricted by comfort and insufficient support.
A great fit starts with creating a stable foundation for the rest of the body, the feet are integral to this. Cleat position can dramatically improve your ride experience, improving support and performance whilst also removing uncomfortable pressure points. Worn cleats can often be the cause of increasing knee pain, renewing your cleats every 3-6 months and having a professional check your set-up, are quick easy ways to reduce the risk of injury.

  • clip in, saddle up and grip the bars

These three things dramatically change the way we ride, from aggravation and injury to stability and strength.

Unfortunately for many of my clients, one or more of these contact points is negatively impacting the way they ride and the enjoyment they experience. I’d like to point out a few things that may help with some of these issues, however if you would care for more information on a specific problem please feel free to contact me

cycling consultancy

At Pave the Way, we believe buying a new bike is special, all riders should have the freedom to collaborate and be a part of the process, instead of being taken advantage of or feeling lost in endless geometry charts and spec sheets.

We offer a 3 step process to help you find the right bike for your needs, carefully selected based on your circumstances and ideal fit. We start with a full Pave the Way Retul bike fit on your existing bike to better understand your current riding position. We assess and make changes, before mapping your new position into our computer. This 3D model, enables us to accurately select which bikes and sizes best suit your needs. After this consultation, and new bike purchase, we then replicate and fine tune the position again, to ensure it’s optimal fit.
